The Main Sneaker

Following my Incredible Three Shoe Plan has led to the purchase of my main sneaker; the Hydro Power II amphibious trail runner by Helly Hansen. Advantageous features over regular sneakers include:
  • light weight
  • removable mid-sole
  • grippy sole
  • dries quick
  • easily washable
  • versatile; good for dry regular sneaker use and water adventures

There is a very important disadvantage to this type of shoe; it is not designed to take on weight. If you plan to lug a 15kg backpack on 10km treks, a shoe like this will not have enough support or cushioning. If your backpacking adventures does not include hikes or long walks, then these may be suitable.

  1. I have used this shoe for wet things about three times in seven and a half months. It dried within a few hours during good hot days which was handy.

In retrospect, this feature wasn't essential; any pair of comfortable sneakers would've done, since wet activities were easy enough to do with alternative shoes or without footwear at all, but it was still a great shoe for all the positive things I wrote about in this article.

The only negative note that stands out with this shoe was that even with a light pack of about 6kg and lots of walking, I could feel just how thin the soles were. Mind you, I have been traveling for over 7 months now, and the soles have held up great, while I am now on my third pair of Havaianas.
