Learning Spanish

It would be foolish or lazy to neglect learning the language if you plan to spend a decent amount of time in any one country or region. There are many ways to immerse yourself in a new language:
  • phrasebooks
  • dictionaries
  • online translators
  • websites
  • podcasts
  • night classes
  • each other

Busuu.com: an interactive site where you are encouraged to connect with other learners and native speakers. The lessons move quickly for absolute novices and a subscription is required to access essential lessons like verbs.

Study Spanisha well-structured site with lessons that build from the basics. Highly recommended.

Johnny Spanish podcast is an excellent resource to learn how to listen and pronounce Spanish sentences.

The Spanish Cat: a Spanish school with schools in Australia as well as Mexico. Classes are available for all levels and at reasonable prices too.

Spanish is not difficult to learn once you are accustomed to the rules. Yo puedo hablar un pocito Espanol ahora. I'm confident that by the time we depart, we'll be able to speak and understand enough to survive. I'll be disappointed if we aren't fluent by the end of our several months' stay!

  3. Of course, taking lessons while traveling is a good idea too. This way, you know exactly what you want to learn, and are constantly immersed in a Spanish speaking environment to aid your learning.

Julie and I did 20 hours in Bolivia and I did another two with 1 On 1 Tutoring in Granada, Nicaragua which was great value because it taught me past and future tenses which all basic Spanish classes seem not to teach.
