Travel Considerations

Not long after I blurted, "Yes! I've always wanted to travel there too!" and was excited at the thought of having someone to travel through scary South America with, I realised that I wasn't sure if Julie and I were compatible enough to travel together. Seeing someone every other day is different to spending 24 hours a day with them in potentially stressful situations. We are going to see the best and absolute worst of each other.

Here are a couple of interesting and though-provoking reading on the topic of traveling with friends:
Something else to consider is when to go. As soon as possible, Julie decided. That was all well and good, but there are things that impact on "now". Money is the main issue. Weather also comes into the discussion and other seasonal things to think about include festivals and local holidays. Being aware of these means you can avoid crowds and peak rates, or visit during a culturally significant and fun time of the year, like Carnival in Brazil.

The bus terminal of Guayaquil is much like an airport, with three storeys, shops and a boarding pass system that gave me trouble. I found my way to the boleterias to buy my ticket and had no problems there, though the boletero told me to hurry as the bus to Salinas was soon to leave. I was warned by everything and everyone about safety in Latin America. Websites, guide books, my family, friends, even total strangers would warn me not to trust anyone, to set cab prices before getting in, to watch my luggage at all times, to keep my valuables within sight... all of the sensible things one should do when traveling.
