The Only Vital Thing Besides Underwear

  • passport: should be valid at least 6 months before planned return to Australia
  • vaccination certificate book and medical authorisation letter: Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into some South American countries
  • driver's licence: another form of photo ID
  • return plane ticket: required for entry into some countries 
  • travel insurance policy certificate 
  • ATM card and a travel debit card
  • two different kinds of credit cards: Visa and MasterCard

Some important information to also take with me include:
  • insurance claims phone number
  • bank's number: for reporting a stolen or lost credit card
  • travel agent's number: for changing my return date

Feeling decidedly hair greasy, smelly, prone to DVTs, and altogether sick of being on a bus for days, Julie and I boarded the worst yet to Salta . Here is my journal entry for the final leg of our 61 hour trip from El Calafate: We are traveling with Chevallier via semi cama and so far, it is the most disappointing carrier. It would be foolish or lazy to neglect learning the language if you plan to spend a decent amount of time in any one country or region. There are many ways to immerse yourself in a new language: phrasebooks dictionaries online translators websites podcasts night classes each other Busuu.com :  an interactive site where you are encouraged to connect with other learners and native speakers. The lessons move quickly for absolute novices and a subscription is required to access essential lessons like verbs. Study Spanish :  a well-structured site with lessons that build from the basics. Highly recommended. Johnny Spanish podcast is an excellent resource to learn how to listen and pronounce Spanish sentences. The Spanish Cat :  a Spanish school with schools in Australia as well as Mexico. Classes are available for all levels and at reasonable prices too. Beware Of Conmen, Thieves And Daydreams

I was warned by everything and everyone about safety in Latin America. Websites, guide books, my family, friends, even total strangers would warn me not to trust anyone, to set cab prices before getting in, to watch my luggage at all times, to keep my valuables within sight... all of the sensible things one should do when traveling. So I was well informed about various scams, guarded about pick-pockets and bag snatchers. It was inevitable that I would encounter at least one loss due to unscrupulous human activities.
