Travel Considerations

Not long after I blurted, "Yes! I've always wanted to travel there too!" and was excited at the thought of having someone to travel through scary South America with, I realised that I wasn't sure if Julie and I were compatible enough to travel together. Seeing someone every other day is different to spending 24 hours a day with them in potentially stressful situations. We are going to see the best and absolute worst of each other.

Here are a couple of interesting and though-provoking reading on the topic of traveling with friends:
Something else to consider is when to go. As soon as possible, Julie decided. That was all well and good, but there are things that impact on "now". Money is the main issue. Weather also comes into the discussion and other seasonal things to think about include festivals and local holidays. Being aware of these means you can avoid crowds and peak rates, or visit during a culturally significant and fun time of the year, like Carnival in Brazil.

Learning Spanish

It would be foolish or lazy to neglect learning the language if you plan to spend a decent amount of time in any one country or region. There are many ways to immerse yourself in a new language: phrasebooks dictionaries online translators websites podcasts night classes each other Busuu.com :  an interactive site where you are encouraged to connect with other learners and native speakers. The lessons move quickly for absolute novices and a subscription is required to access essential lessons like verbs. Study Spanish :  a well-structured site with lessons that build from the basics. Highly recommended. Johnny Spanish podcast is an excellent resource to learn how to listen and pronounce Spanish sentences. The Spanish Cat :  a Spanish school with schools in Australia as well as Mexico. Classes are available for all levels and at reasonable prices too. Beware Of Conmen, Thieves And Daydreams

I was warned by everything and everyone about safety in Latin America. Websites, guide books, my family, friends, even total strangers would warn me not to trust anyone, to set cab prices before getting in, to watch my luggage at all times, to keep my valuables within sight... all of the sensible things one should do when traveling. So I was well informed about various scams, guarded about pick-pockets and bag snatchers. It was inevitable that I would encounter at least one loss due to unscrupulous human activities.
